What’s On in the Local Area this November

November has some great events in our area. The season brings spectacular Autumn colours in the outdoors. Of course, 5th November has fireworks and bonfires to enjoy. I’ve found events in our usual venues as well as some new places to explore. Some events need booking and will sell out so act now to get tickets. Have fun!

Auckland Castle Re-opening on Saturday, 2 November 2019
Auckland Castle is one of the best-preserved bishops’ palaces in the whole of Europe and is at the centre of The Auckland Project. The Castle has underone major conservation work, which has transformed its state rooms to their original Georgian Gothic splendour, as designed by the renowned English architect James Wyatt. Be amongst the first to visit the re-opened Castle on Saturday, 2 November 2019
North Pennines Stargazing Festival
The 2019 North Pennines Stargazing Festival (#NorthPennStarFest19) is running between 23 October and 3 November – during Autumn Half Term.
Visit the inky black skies in the darkest mainland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and celebrate our fabulous nightscape – enjoying jaw-dropping stargazing opportunities.
Over the 12 days of the festival you will find 30 events tailor made to help you to unlock the wonders of the night sky. The stunning planetarium film – ‘CAPCOM GO! The Apollo Story’ in the Pop-up Planetarium events (Hexham, Barnard Castle and Alston). Marking the 50th anniversary of the first man on the Moon
Hexham Race Course Weatherby Day
Hexham Racecourse takes full advantage of its natural amphitheatre setting to provide superb viewing of racing. The left handed undulating track extending to 1 mile 4 furlongs places emphasis on stamina and is surrounded by magnificent countryside.

Run Durham Hamsterley 10 Miler 2019
The Hamsterley 10 Miler takes place in the Forest Drive and other forest paths with some steady climbs.
The race is one large loop which turns and comes back to the start/finish area at the Nest Car Park, near the middle of the Hamsterley Forest Drive. Chip timing will be used on this accurately measured scenic route.
All finishers will receive a medal and optional race t shirt is available at extra cost

Minsteracres Walking Retreat
Enjoy a walk of seven to ten miles through the beautiful countryside around Minsteracres, with time for prayer, reflection and sharing of the beauty of creation. You will need suitable walking boots and warm, weatherproof clothing. Please bring a packed lunch.
This walking retreat will take place on Saturday 16 November starting at 10:00am and ending at 5:00pm.

Raby Castle Stir Up Sunday – 24th November
Grab your apron and roll up your sleeves… Stir-up Sunday is coming to Raby Castle! Stir-up Sunday is a centuries-old tradition where cooks spend the last Sunday before Advent ‘stirring up’ the Christmas pudding. Dating back to Victorian times, the whole family took a turn at stirring the Christmas pudding, making a wish. With expert pudding maker and  Award winning chocolatier David Greenwood Haigh to share his secrets! Suitable for any skillset, you will have step-by-step tuition to create a delicious Christmas Pudding to take home, ready for the big day. For chocolate fans, David will also be teaching part of the session on Mendiants, the perfect French confection given as gifts around Christmas time.
