Welcome to What’s on in our area this January. Traditionally the main attractions ‘Go dark’ in January which gives us a great opportunity to explore some new activities. We’re constantly looking to introduce you to new venues and different experiences. Even if an event isn’t to your immediate taste why not give it a try. There are so many little gems in this location. Have fun!
I’ve given a web link in most cases. Please check before you go. As with all exploring, some of our ‘What’s on’ suggestions will be brilliant, some will give you completely new experiences, and others may be a disappointment. I’m putting this list together based on what I think looks interesting.
Kielder Dark Sky Trail 10km Run
4th January 2020
The Kielder night trail run is open to all abilities of runners. You will be tackling some of the amazing trails that Kielder Forest has to offer including single track, open forest tracks and even a ‘bit’ of mud! All runners must run with a head torch and suitable trail shoes. Kielder’s weather climate in January will add to the fun! You will either be running in snow, rain or if your lucky a lovely crisp evening under the stars in the dark skies of Kielder. “Deep in the heart of Northumberland you can experience a night sky which is out of this world”

Vindolanda January Site Tours.
The tours will run daily at 11:30am between 6th January 2020 – 7th February 2020.
Our guided tours will run from the Westgate (main visitors entrance) in the courtyard. You will be led through some of the highlights of the site remains as well as be updated on this years excavations.
These tours will be short 30 minute tours with the option to ask questions at the end. You then have the opportunity to explore the site more fully yourself.

Belsay Hall: Memory and Light by Arvo Part and Arup:

Experience ‘Memory and Light’ – a sound and light installation that will bring new life to Belsay Hall.
‘Memory and Light’ was first commissioned by London Design Festival in 2018, for the Victoria and Albert Museum’s Norfolk House Music Room. It has now been re-imagined for Belsay Hall, entering into a new dialogue of memory, legacy and freedom of expression within the historic space.

The Aurora Borealis (also known as Northern Lights) are magical and inspirational phenomena that grace the Northern night skies. What are they and how can you go hunting for them successfully?
Aurorae are now very well understood by physicists around the world but for thousands of years and for many communities, they played a part in religions, fairytales and folklore. Join us on a journey that begins with the history of the social and cultural impact of the Northern Lights through to our scientific understanding of the Aurora today.
At Battlesteads Observatory we aim to give our guests the knowledge and understanding you will need to hunt the Aurora Borealis for yourselves. You’ll learn the basics of the science behind how they are created, how to find them, which apps to use and some hints and tips on how to photograph them. Questions are welcomed and our team will be on hand to help you with anything we are able to.
Humbleton and Harehope Circuit Walk
19th Jan Northumberland National Park 9 mile guided walk
Follow St Cuthbert’s way to the site of the Battle of Humbleton Hill and it’s fascinating history. The circular walk follows St Cuthbert’s Way going westwards over Gains Law and Black Law before descending by the Gleadsclough track.
The group then joins the bridleway which takes us below Harehope Hill and Humbleton Hill before returning via the Humbleton track to Wooler Common. This walk is steeped in history and provides exceptional views.
