THE OLD GOAL

Built in 1330 as England’s first purpose-built jail, it offers insight into the turbulent Border Reivers era, bringing to life the cattle rustling, clan feuds and guerrilla warfare of the Scottish border.

Built in the 15th century, this striking landmark once served as the gateway to the Archbishop of York’s buildings and later housed courtrooms where prisoners from the Old Gaol were tried, overlooking the Market Place.

THE MARKET PLACE & THE SHAMBLES

The historic heart of Hexham, the Market Place has been a lively gathering spot for centuries. It was the site of the 1761 Hexham Riot and is home to The Shambles, built in 1766, as well as the old town pump (Pant), which features poetry by Wilfrid Gibson.
